"We have seen a consistent increase in bed bug control service performed since the ‘new normal’ post-COVID-19 pandemic," said Eric Braun, a Technical Service Manager at Terminix, in a news release.

The company said the top states with the most services within their cities include Ohio, Texas, Florida, California and Pennsylvania.

While Cleveland-Akron was named No. 3, it was not the only Ohio city on the list. Dayton was ranked No. 11 followed immediately by Columbus at No. 12. Cincinnati was ranked No. 14 and Toledo was ranked the lowest of Ohio cities at No. 40.

Terminix said one way the pests can make their way into your home is when traveling from hotel rooms or other lodging places.

“The best way to prevent bringing bed bugs home while traveling is being able to identify them and their signs in the areas where you rest or sleep,” Braun said.

Steps to take to identify bed bugs include:

  • Inspecting mattress seams, headboard and nearby furniture for rust-colored stains, shed skins or live bugs

  • Use a flashlight to check deep crevices, folds and corners

  • Check nightstands, chair edges, sofas and in drawer joints

  • Avoid placing luggage on the bed or floor until after inspecting

Teminix also said during travels other steps that may help are keeping the suitcase closed.

“Once you have returned home, unpack your suitcases along the exterior of your home or in an area like the basement or garage to avoid introducing bed bugs into sleeping areas,” said Braun.

The company also recommends putting clothes in the dryer before washing, as 30 minutes under high heat should eliminate any live bugs or eggs that may have hitched a ride. Steam cleaning could also help with items that cannot be placed in the dryer.
