At about 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to a residence on North Ortman Drive after someone called about a man “acting erratically” and throwing things in the street.

When deputies got there, the sheriff said the suspect was in the bedroom holding a knife.

Deputies tried asking him to come out.

That’s when the sheriff said the man tried to take a deputy’s gun and tried to stab him.

The deputy shot him several times.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The deputy is being treated for a head injury, but he’s expected to be OK.

“I’ve been doing this for 34 years and I don’t think I’ve ever had two deputy-involved shootings in one day,” said Mina. “I think it just shows more people today, I think based on my experience, use violence against the police.”

The deputy involved in this shooting is on paid administrative leave while the FDLE investigates.
