The Maui Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 27, and the Hawaii Department of Transportation is alerting motorists to the presence of runners on a portion of Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30) from 5 a.m.
The course will begin and end at the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort on Kaanapali Parkway. The right southbound lane on Honoapiilani Highway between Kaanapali Parkway and Aholo Road will be closed for a portion of the race. One lane in the southbound direction will remain open to traffic.
HDOT says the makai right shoulder on Honoapiilani Highway from Aholo Road to Papalaua Wayside Park will be closed for runners throughout the marathon. All traffic lanes will be open.
Marathon participants will be turning around at Papalaua Wayside Park at mile post 10.5 on Honoapiilani Highway then head back to Kaanapali along the same route on the highway shoulder.
In addition to the full marathon, there will also be a half marathon, 10k and 5k, all with staggered start times after the full marathon begins. These races will follow the full marathon route but with different turnaround points. All races will begin and end at the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort.
Roads are expected to reopen by 9 a.m. or earlier.
Police officers will be stationed at major intersections. Motorists are asked to drive carefully near race participants and obey all traffic controls.
