TAMPA, Fla. — Food trucks are traditionally a place someone can stop by for a quick bite. Now, two food trucks in Plant City are going the extra mile for families who are afraid to travel.

What You Need To Know

  • Taqueria Angel and El Antojito Loco are offering free delivery service to the community
  • The initiative stemmed from families being too afraid to travel due to immigration concerns
  • They plan to operate the service free of charge for as long as they can

On a busy road in Plant City are two food trucks, each with a unique menu of items.

Nadia Vallin is the owner of Taqueria Angel. She says cooking has always been her passion.

“We sell quesabirria, we sell tacos, quesadillas,” she said.

She’s been at this location since January. The move has been met with a lot of new customers, but many are now choosing to stay home.

She says it’s because of immigration concerns in the community.

“We put ourselves in the communities’ shoes because we are also immigrants and in similar situations…so we said we have to do something to help,” she said.

So, Vallin and Alyssa Rodriguez, the owner of El Antojitos loco right next door, have partnered to help the immigrant community who may not want to travel to pick up a meal, by instead offering free delivery.

Rodriguez says for about a week now they’ve made five deliveries a day. She opened her business in 2018, now more than ever she says her customers need her help.

“We shouldn’t have to be scared to leave our homes. Our children shouldn’t have to be scared, not knowing if their parents would make it back home.” Rodriguez comes from an immigrant family herself who would migrate for work.

She says the community, who are working those jobs today, feels unsafe as immigration enforcement increases.

It’s why she hopes the delivery service will help in some way and inspire others to do the same.

“I hope that with what we’re trying to do, other businesses help us unite, not only just for the Latino community but for everybody,” she said.

Each delivered meal comes with a “know your rights” card.

Joining forces to keep families fed during a time of uncertainty for many.

The food truck owners say they will be offering this service free of charge for as long as they can.
