LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation is planning to collect new speed data on one of Lake County’s busiest roads after a resident brought up concerns about a troublesome right-hand turn lane on U.S. 27.

What You Need To Know

  • Julie Anselmo says a right turn lane is needed from southbound U.S. 27 to Boggy Marsh Road

  • Anselmo says her daughter was hit while trying to slow down at the intersection, in front of St. Faustina’s Catholic Church

  • FDOT determined a turn lane isn’t needed

  • FDOT says because U.S. 27 is a six-lane road, drivers can pass vehicles slowing down to turn right

Julie Anselmo says her daughter was involved in a crash while on her way to church back in February.

“As she turned into the driveway here and made a right-hand turn with her blinker on, apparently this person had her head down, according to what the person said, did not realize that she was coming upon my daughter and slammed into the whole side, right side of her car from the back to the front, and just scraped the whole side of it,” said Anselmo.

It happened just seconds before arriving at St. Faustina’s Catholic Church, north of the Four Corners in Lake County.

Anselmo’s daughter and her granddaughter were inside the car. They were both okay, but shook up.

Now she wants a dedicated right turn lane on southbound U.S. 27 at Boggy Marsh Road, at the entrance of the church.

“We want something that’s going to be done to keep the people safe, trying to get a right hand turning lane into the church. There’s enough room there,” Anselmo said.

Dedicated in 2023, FDOT conducted a traffic study during the permitting process for the church, but didn’t find a need for a right turn lane, based on projected traffic volumes then.

In addition, an FDOT spokeswoman says because U.S. 27 is a six-lane roadway, motorists can pass vehicles slowing down to turn right.

“Even though the street limit’s 55 mph, they’re doing 70, 80. There’s big trucks going by as you can see, and they’re not slowing down,” said Anselmo.

A review of safety data since 2022 didn’t show a pattern of crashes related to turning, but FDOT agreed to collect new speed data to determine if additional warning signage for Boggy Marsh Road is necessary.
