DEERFIELD, Il.- If you aren't 21 don't try to buy any tobacco products from drugstore giant Walgreens.

Beginning September 1, customers will need to be at least 21 years old to buy cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and other tobacco products.  The new ban takes effect in more than 9,500 stores nationwide.  The decision comes just weeks after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called the store the top violator of laws meant to restrict cigarette sales to minors.

In March, it was announced that since 2010 more than 1,800 violations happened at Walgreens.

Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell plans to introduce legislation to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco and tobacco products from 18 to 21 nationally.

Walgreens rival, CVS Health, quit selling tobacco in it's stores years ago.
