Michelle Caruso-Cabrera spent two decades covering financial news on CNBC. Now, she’s running for city comptroller.

The candidate said her career reporting on money and financial trends has prepared her to make crucial financial decisions for the city.

"I have a deep understanding of financial statements, income statements, balance sheets, cash flows — that's what I did for 20 years,” she told NY1. “I was on the board of a financial institution and on the audit committee as well. These are very powerful instruments. They provide transparency. They can be tools and weapons in the right hands. Unfortunately, they're not often in the right hands."

One of Caruso-Cabrera’s top priorities would be to audit the NYPD to ensure policing is rooted in evidence-based outcomes.

Caruso-Cabrera said she also wants to make sure there are more women and minority money managers.

Last year, the candidate unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Caruso-Cabrera said she has no plans of using the position as a launching pad for a mayoral run, something previous comptrollers have done.

Caruso-Cabrera joined “Mornings on 1” as part of a series of interviews with the candidates for city comptroller.
