President Donald Trump made a rare overnight stay in his hometown Thursday — and took shots at the newest Democrat to enter the 2020 presidential race.

Trump arrived in New York City in the early evening and went to a roundtable with supporters and a fundraiser that the head of Cantor Fitzgerald hosted. The president is spending the evening at Trump Tower before he goes back to Washington on Friday.

His visit came on the same day Mayor Bill de Blasio officially launched his campaign to oust Trump from the White House.

Trump has already taken aim at some of the Democrats hoping to become the nominee and face the president in the 2020 general election, and he made sure to take shots at de Blasio, calling him the worst mayor in New York City history.

That shot comes after de Blasio and members of the Trump family got into a Twitter feud earlier this week over the mayor's "Green New Deal" rally inside Trump Tower.

De Blasio, meanwhile, is on his way out of the city to make his first official stops in Iowa and South Carolina this weekend. But he made sure to respond on Twitter as well:

Since moving to the Oval Office, Trump has made few visits to his home state, which disapproves of him. As a result, the scene around Trump Tower has been downright tranquil compared to the period after Election Day, when it served as Trump's home base, playing home to VIPs, tying up traffic, and prompting strict security measures.

But security around Trump Tower while the president stays overnight has been tight and tied up traffic.

NYPD officials previously estimated every day Trump spends in New York costs the city about $300,000. And that's not accounting for any protests.

Trump previously made only 14 visits to New York City since he was sworn into office. His getaway of choice has instead been Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, and his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.
