On Thursday, Zohran Mamdani released a digital ad as a poll from PIX11, Emerson College and The Hill found the Queens assemblymember continues to gain ground.

What You Need To Know

  • Mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani released a new digital ad on Thursday

  • A new poll showed he could be closing the gap with the frontrunner in the race, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo

  • A Cuomo spokesperson called the poll an "outlier"

“His social media is exciting, he’s in his early 30s, he’s connecting with young voters,” J.C. Polanco, a professor at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, said.

The poll showed in the first round of ranked-choice voting, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo would receive 35% of the vote, Mamdani 23% and Brad Lander 11%.

NY1 spoke with Lander about the numbers just after they were released.

“I think it says New Yorkers are starting to pay attention. Cuomo’s support is slipping, can be beaten. I’m proud to be one of the three candidates in the final round of this election,” the city comptroller said.

Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi called the poll an "outlier."

“Andrew Cuomo is the consistent and overwhelming frontrunner in this race,” he said.

After 10 rounds of ranked-choice voting, the poll found Cuomo would ultimately win, 54% to Mamdani’s 46%.

“There’s a surprisingly low number of undecideds right now — really, really, very few,” Matt Taglia, senior director of Emerson Polling, said. “So, I think what will matter at this point is that second choice, people are not necessarily locked in for their second choice vote.”
