Two people died and six others were injured when a fire tore through a Bronx apartment building Wednesday morning, authorities said. 

The three-alarm blaze broke out on the top floor of a five-story building at 735 E. 242nd St., near Barnes Avenue in Wakefield, around 5:25 a.m., the FDNY said. 

A male civilian was pronounced dead at the scene, and a female civilian was pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center, police said. Their names and ages were not immediately released. 

One other civilian and five FDNY members who were hurt were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, officials said.

The five FDNY members suffered non-life threatening injuries, the department said. The extent of the third civilian's injuries wasn’t immediately clear. 

More than 130 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was placed under control around 7:20 a.m., the FDNY said. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the department said.
