Marisa Rose lives in a building next to Washington Square Park and enjoys taking her kids there in the morning, but Rose says it's a different story at night: noise, alcohol use and even fireworks light up the park.

“The trash in the mornings has become really obscene and it’s not really a place for children, let alone adults,” Rose said. “The park has turned into a nightmare for those of us with kids. There’s constant drugs, constant nudity.”

The NYPD put a 10 p.m. curfew in place last weekend, and Rose said she sees a difference.

“Today is the best I’ve seen since before COVID,” Rose said Sunday.

On Saturday night, the park was a whole other scene. Video shows at least 23 people being arrested, and there were physical confrontations between police and people at the park.

The curfew lasts from 10 p.m. - 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday in an effort to keep large crowds from forming at night.

But even after that rowdy night, some local residents said the restrictions are unnecessary.

“I feel like there’s really no need for a curfew here,” said SoHo resident Candace Fraser-Macgregor. “It’s such a lively area, especially at night. I don’t really see why it’s happening.”

The curfew will remain in effect until further notice, according to police and the city Parks Department.
