ALBANY, N.Y. - State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie on Thursday announced lawmakers will not be voting this session on the bill to change how city students get into specialized high schools.

The decision means it will not be taken up until next year.

Lawmakers had a heated debate about the issue Wednesday, which was proposed by the mayor to improve diversity.

Of the 5,000 incoming freshman offered admission to top schools this year, only 172 are black and 298 are Hispanic.

The state legislative session ends on June 20.
