On a national scale, the disabled make up 20 percent of the population, but only 3.9 percent are employed, a number that has not changed in years. While some disabled people cannot work, and some are reluctant to work for fear of losing their health benefits, employers often either don’t consider the disabled when looking for workers or are afraid to hire them, mistakenly believing it will cost them too much money in medical benefits, or that the disabled take too much time off work or will make their other workers uncomfortable. Commissioner Victor Calise is joined by Carol Glazer, president of the National Organization on Disability, and Edward R. Matthews, CEO of the ADAPT Community Network. The three of them expand the discussion on the disabled in the workplace and dispel those myths.
