1. Trump warns that arrest of Palestinian activist at Columbia will be 'first of many'
President Donald Trump warned today that the arrest and possible deportation of a Palestinian activist who helped lead protests at Columbia University will be the first “of many to come” as his administration cracks down on campus demonstrations against Israel and the war in Gaza.
Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful U.S. resident who was a graduate student at Columbia until December, was detained Saturday by federal immigration agents in New York and flown to an immigration jail in Louisiana.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has a commanding lead in a hypothetical 2026 Democratic primary, according to a Siena College poll released today.
According to the poll, the governor has the backing of 46% of Democrats, far above support levels of 11% for Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado and 10% for Rep. Ritchie Torres. Neither has announced they are running for the office.
3. Former Bronx clubhouse revived as community center
Commonpoint has opened a new full-service community center in the Bronx. The center is located inside a former Madison Square Boys and Girls Club location on Hoe Avenue in Crotona.
NY1's Roger Clark took a look at the space, which includes a pool, renovated gym, classrooms and a music and podcast studio.
4. Doctors declare Pope Francis no longer in imminent danger due to pneumonia, but remains hospitalized
Doctors said today Pope Francis is no longer in imminent danger of death as a result of pneumonia that has kept him hospitalized for nearly a month, but have decided to keep him hospitalized for several more days to receive treatment.
In a late update, the doctors said the 88-year-old pope remains stable and has consolidated improvements in recent days, as determined by blood tests and positive responses to drug treatments.
5. More Americans fear missing minimum debt payments, survey finds
As President Donald Trump’s tariffs against China and Canada kick off retaliatory trade actions affecting U.S. consumers, Americans are feeling more pessimistic about their future financial situations.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s February 2025 Survey of Consumer Expectations found more Americans are concerned about unemployment, payment delinquency and credit access a year from now.
6. S&P 500 tumbles most since 2022 as Wall Street questions how much pain for economy Trump will accept
The U.S. stock market's sell-off is worsening today, and it's heading toward its worst day since 2022 as Wall Street questions how much pain President Donald Trump is willing for the economy to endure in order to get what he wants.
The S&P 500 was down as much as 3% in afternoon trading, coming off its worst week since September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 929 points, or 2.2%, as of 2:43 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 4.2% lower.
