BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A 12-year-old boy who was sitting inside a parked minivan with two other individuals was fatally shot in the head on Thursday in East Flatbush, according to police.

A 20-year-old woman sitting in the driver's seat of the dark-colored Toyota was shot "multiple times in the body," but is expected to survive, according to NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Kemper.

Police say the boy, who was in the passenger seat, was also shot multiple times in the body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in critical but stable condition.

The NYPD said an 8-year-old girl sitting in the rear seat of the vehicle was not injured.

The shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. at East 56th Street and Linden Boulevard, officials said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the three individuals pulled over in the car to eat food when shots were fired that penetrated their vehicle, according to police.

Police are searching for two vehicles, both black sedans, which fled the scene.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time.

Mayor Eric Adams, who was present at the press conference held by the NYPD Thursday night, said that around 48 guns were recently removed in and around the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.

"We're going to catch this shooter,” Adams said. "But as long as we have guns and a revolving-door system, we are going to continue to come to crime scenes like this. It's time for it to stop, that's why we are here."

According to the police, shootings involving persons under the age of 18 have increased by 184% this year, when compared to the same time period in 2021. The data does not include Thursday's incident.

Authorities are asking for the public's help and urges anyone with information regarding the shooting to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
