The City and County of Honolulu’s Office of Economic Revitalization announced the launch of its pilot small business incubator program, called Idea2Biz, and the 20 aspiring entrepreneurs from the Waianae Coast who were selected to take part in the 13-week program.
The program started Tuesday at the Kalanihoʻokahā Community Learning Center in Nānākuli, where participants will continue to meet weekly until Sept. 13.
Idea2Biz is aimed at turning entrepreneurial ideas into viable businesses through training in entrepreneurship fundamentals, financial planning, marketing, and more, according to a news release.
“This program is about investing in local talent and ensuring the next generation of entrepreneurs has the tools to succeed,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “By focusing on the Waiʻanae Coast, we’re helping create more economic opportunities for local families by bringing these resources directly into their community.”
The OER encouraged individuals from Oahu’s Waianae Coast to apply to the program and selected participants from more than 100 applicants. Business ideas range from artisanal goods and food products to cultural education and sustainable clothing and apparel. After completing the program, participants will be eligible to receive at least $1,250 in early-stage funding to support their business launch.
“We’re excited to connect local entrepreneurs with the tools necessary to develop their business ideas and prepare them to take the next steps—whether that’s launching a business, formalizing a side hustle, or growing something that’s already in motion,” said Amy Asselbaye, Executive Director of the Office of Economic Revitalization.
