OHIO — Gov. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, has ordered flags to be lowered to honor Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer, who was killed on Memorial Day.
DeWine's order is for U.S. flags and Ohio's state flags to fly at half-staff for all public buildings and grounds in Morrow County, at the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center and the Rhodes Office Tower beginning Tuesday. The flags shall remain lowered until sunset on the day of Sherrer's funeral.
Other public buildings and grounds across the state may lower their flags to half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.
Sherrer joined the department in 2021 and was 31-years-old. He was responding to a domestic situation when he got into a shooting altercation with the suspect. He was transported to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.
