  • Outgoing superintendent Marty Pollio spent the last day of school with students kids, sending them off to summer break

  • The Jefferson County Board of Education voted Thursday to begin contract negotiations with Yearwood

The focus shifts to the district’s next superintendent. The JCPS Board of Education offered Brian Yearwood a contract at its Thursday meeting to take over for Pollio.

Pollio spent the last day of school high-fiving kids and sending them off to summer break.

While the summer break starts, Pollio will spend the month of June to train his replacement.

The announcement of the new superintendent was leaked Friday morning when Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Middletown, revealed it on social media.

“It’s not the best in the world that it, that it got out. And I think it’s better after the contract has been negotiated and signed,” Pollio said.

The Board of Education issued a statement from chair Corrie Shull Friday night. It said, “The Jefferson County Board of Education has extended a contract offer to Dr. Brian Yearwood and we are currently working through negotiations with him. The Board voted last night in open session to authorize the chair to begin contract negotiations with one of the finalists.  Those negotiations are ongoing. If negotiations are successful, the Board will be calling a special meeting to approve a contract with Dr. Yearwood.”

“I’m sure the Board did their due diligence and he seems to me like he has a very good, positive background in the district that he came from. And a lot of experience, so I think he’ll do very well. And I’m here to support and help in any way I possibly can,” Pollio added.

The current superintendent, who has been with JCPS since 1997, said the last day of school is always good.

“Probably ask the principals more than me, but it seems they’re pretty excited about it. [It’s] Always a fun day, the last day of school, so I’m excited to see some as they walk out the door,” Pollio said.

Pollio will become the Ivy Tech Community College System president on July 1. The college system is in Indiana.
