The air mass over South Central Texas is slowly modifying. Temperatures have risen to the 50s Thursday and after being stuck in the upper 40s the last few days. Highs will likely rise to the low 70s by Saturday.

A new factor in the rain outlook is a disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico that has strengthened north winds over South Texas. This will keep cool air locked in place at the surface while also pushing deeper tropical moisture into the mix. In addition to the upper level jet stream already in place, this feature will increase the chances of heavy rain.

A Flash Flood Watch is in place through at least Friday morning, now including Bexar and Comal counties as well as Hill Country counties immediately west of the San Antonio metro. After unprecedented rains through September, soils are deeply saturated and any additional rain will quickly run off. This can only add to the flooding problems with many river basins at or near flood stage.

Remember, “Turn around, don’t drown” if you should encounter a flooded roadway. We’ll be covering potential flooding nonstop on Spectrum News.

Rain chances trend downward by the end of the weekend. Some drier weather is expected starting next week. More details are in the Seven Day Forecast.
