SAN ANTONIO -- The Salvation Army made a holiday meal possible for some San Antonio families. They handed out Thanksgiving food along with regular monthly groceries to 100 pre-qualified families.

"We're real blessed to be able to do that today with a group of volunteers and with good weather," said Bray Mayhar of the Salvation Army. "We have something to be thankful for to be able to help in this way."

Volunteers packed up some extra food including mashed potatoes, carrots, fruit and a frozen turkey.

They said some people really depend on this, and last year's distribution was the first time one man was able to provide a Thanksgiving meal for his family.

"It's helping in regards to being low on money. I just moved out of my house and I'm trying to get another house so I'm saving money and this will help me with resources in regards to having to spend that big money on Thanksgiving for my kids," said a San Antonio resident.

This is just the start of the holiday season for the Salvation Army, and it needs help to make it happen. The angel trees are up in San Antonio-area malls and they are also looking for volunteer bell ringers to man red kettles around town.
