SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County has the highest rate of reported domestic violence per capita in Texas and one of the highest in the nation, according to the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter. And right now, shelter staff said they are in urgent need of winter clothes. The shelter is in need of the following:

  • Children’s coats (all sizes)
  • Ladies' coats (all sizes)
  • Sweaters
  • Gloves and Scarves
  • Baby wipes
  • Children’s underwear (all sizes)
  • Ladies' underwear (all sizes)
  • Children’s pajamas
  • Ladies' pajamas
  • Blankets
  • Pillows

Items can be new or gently used as long they're clean and can be used immediately. More than 180 clients are in this shelter right now, including women, children and some men. Shelter staff said two-thirds of the people they help are children.

"I think for the most part they are really grateful that they have found the safety that the shelter can offer and the services that we can offer so that they can begin a life of their own, independent from threats and from the horrific impact of battering and abuse," said Marta Pelaez of the Battered Women and Children's Shelter.

The Battered Women and Children's Shelter Donation Center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The shelter is located at 2617 N. Main Ave. in San Antonio.
