SAN ANTONIO -- Heavy rain moved through the city Tuesday afternoon leading to some flooding in the typical flood prone areas.

San Antonio authorities reminded drivers they should "Turn around don't drown" when a road is flooded or closed by barricades.

  • 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult.
  • A foot of rushing water to carry away a small car.
  • 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.

It is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

"With the heavy rain expected in San Antonio the main thing is that there's going to be some areas prone to flooding. So of course we want people to turn around don't drown," said Doug Greene, of the San Antonio Police Department.

When it rains, San Antonio police want drivers to be defensive, drive with headlights, keep a safe distance from the car in front, use turn signals and drive at a safe speed.

"Here in the state of Texas, if you're driving in poor weather conditions at the posted speed limit and that's a dangerous speed to be going while the weather is bad you can still be cited," said Greene.
