David Valdez had arguably the most up-close seat to the Bush's while at the White House. He was the photographer to President George H.W. Bush.

He snapped what have become iconic photos of the couple and also the most personal portraits of the Bush's with their family.

“I’d go to their private residence and maybe they’d have a guest there, and Mrs. Bush would be sitting on the couch crocheting and she had her glasses on,” Valdez recalled. “And I’d walk in, she’d see me and she would take her glasses off. I’d shoot some pictures and when she put her glasses back on, I was done.”

Valdez said Barbara lived by putting faith, family and friends first.
