Described as a trailblazer by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the first openly gay member of the state's highest court has been sworn in.

Judge Paul Feinman officially takes his place on the Court of Appeals following a ceremony in Albany.

Feinman, who has more than 20 years of experience as a judge, was confirmed by the state senate as an Associate Judge in June.

Lawmakers from both parties praised him for his experience.

Cuomo nominated Feinman, saying his career has been dedicated to the causes of justice and fairness.

Feinman is filling a vacancy created by the death of Judge Sheilia Abdus-Salaam.

Her body was found in the Hudson River in April, and officials later ruled her death was a suicide.
