SAN ANTONIO – A suspected thief is dead after he was allegedly shot by a homeowner in San Antonio on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded around 6:30 a.m. when a person attempted to steal a car jack from the front lawn of a home on Jennings Street. The homeowner then shot the suspected thief, who drove off.

The suspect was traveling a high rate of speed when he crashed into a tree.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the homeowner was trying to protect his property, and was not injured in the shooting.

“He crashed into a tree at apparently a high rate of speed. The front-end is pretty much destroyed,” said McManus.  

The suspect, a man in his 20s, died at the scene. The homeowner is not facing charges at this time. It was not immediately clear if the suspected thief died as a result of the shooting or the subsequent crash. Stay with us for updates. 

The suspect has been identified as 54-year-old Jesse Anthony Agruello Jr.
