SAN ANTONIO – It’s a big weekend for runners coming to San Antonio from around the world for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

  • 10k, 5k on Saturday; marathon on Sunday
  • Trainer suggest carbs, salt tablets, electrolytes, caffeine
  • Street closures downtown

There will be a 10k and 5k on Saturday, and the full marathon happens Sunday.

Experts say if you signed up for the and haven’t been training, good luck. Trainers also said people will prepare for six to nine months at least, and sometimes up to a year for a marathon.

There are a few tips for what runners should be doing the day before and the morning of the race to get prepared.

"I would do 100 carbs about two and a half to four hours prior to the race. Make sure you get simple carbs like a banana, waffles. Some people like the syrup on there. Load up on about 100 grams of carbs,” trainer Shawn Kraft said.

Kraft also warned about cramps during the race.

“You see a lot of people cramp up, that’s important. You can do a salt tablet about two hours into a race or every 30 minutes do a salt tablet along with electrolytes and a little bit of caffeine. I recommend 30 to 60 carbs every half hour or four miles,” Kraft said.

There are 20,000 registered runners from all 50 states and 27 countries.

Live bands, cheer teams, entertainment stations and a mariachi mile will be positioned along the 26.2-mile marathon.

The city is expecting congestion downtown. Broadway Street will be completely closed between Market Street and Flores Street between Saturday and Sunday.
