SAN ANTONIO- As workers begin to install a single, 50-foot Christmas tree in Travis Park, one man is working to collect hundreds of artificial tiny trees to display in Alamo Plaza.

The collection continues in its second year after Steve Monreal found out the city’s largest tree would permanently relocate from Alamo Plaza to Travis Park last year.

“Heck, if we can manage to get 300 families to come out, I think that would be pretty memorable,” Monreal said.

Monreal was successful in collecting several tree’s last year, in what he dubbed a “Mini Christmas Tree Protest.” This year he is hoping to collect 300 trees for a small lighting ceremony on November 25. H-E-B is also sponsoring a 20-foot tree similar to the one they gifted last year. The company’s tree will be installed November 26.

“I think most people would prefer to be in front of the Alamo because it’s a destination location but it’s not a huge issue being a few blocks away [at Travis Park],” Desiree Bailey, a resident, said.

Monreal is hopeful supporters will join him at his event the weekend after Thanksgiving.
