TEXAS – While Central Texas is under a freeze warning with an Arctic cold front on the way, there are several ways homeowners can prepare before the frigid temperatures hit.

A freeze warning has been issued for Williamson, Travis, Hays, and Bexar counties.

Pipes

One of the major concerns for homes is the possibility for pipes to freeze and burst, which is expensive to repair. The City of Buda has some tips to keep pipes from bursting:

  • Keep the heat turned on in your home
  • Allow the faucet to drip
  • Keep interior doors open
  • Seal up cracks and holes in pipes
  • Apply heating tape
  • Add extra insulation

Pipes can be wrapped in newspaper or old clothes.

Preventing heating fires

As Texans are turning on their heaters and using their fire places for the first time this season, the San Antonio Fire Department has some ways to prevent a house fire:

  • Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month
  • Clear 3-foot area around fireplaces
  • Never use an oven to heat your home
  • Clean and inspect chimneys regularly
  • Turn portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed
  • Use a fireplace screen to avoid fire sparks
