SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas - Day by day, brick by brick, as the church rebuilds, survivors continue to search for joy. For many, it brings them back to the place where it all started.

You never know where a path might take you.

Last November, no one could imagine what would happen off U.S. Highway 87 in Sutherland Springs. For 26 people, their paths came to an end -- but no one could imagine where the church's path would turn next.

"The gunman came in an intended to kill the whole church, and what he accomplished was exactly the opposite," said survivor Kris Workman.

Fast forward a year and you'll find a congregation stronger than ever - with paths that bring them together. During Thursday nights at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, you'll find a community dinner, smiles, and prayer. You'll see survivors like Kris Workman. He believes in sharing his story, even though he moves down his path differently now.

The worship area is the quietest place you'll find on a Thursday.

"He actually shot me twice but I survived. For the foreseeable future, as far as the doctors are concerned, I'll be in a wheelchair. One of the shots took out a large portion of my spine," said Workman.

It didn't take long for Workman to be back at work, or leading worship, or back at his hobbies like racing.

While many people might be angry with God, Kris says his faith is more solid than ever.

"He's really present on this Earth and sometimes it just takes a really bad event to show the best in people," he said.

From here, he lives for what brings him joy.

"Number one, my daughter and my family. I'm the type of person that says, put something in front of me and tell me I can't, and watch me go do it," he said.

Just as the nation and Workman watched paths change that November day, a year later it's come full circle, back to where it started.

"Your family is here, God is here, this is the place that you really need to be, so maybe it's hard to bring yourself here on some cases but this is where you probably should be," Workman said.
