AUSTIN, Texas -- State Rep. Paul Workman, R-Austin, is the only Republican representing Travis County in the Texas House.

He has the endorsement of the Governor, has been elected four times and has outraised his opponent during this election cycle. But Democrats have been targeting the district which was nearly evenly split between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016.

“They were very close and we outperformed both of those in the election,” Workman said. “We’re concerned. We’re confident we will come out on top and it’ll be a close race, but we’re working really hard and we’ll keep our foot on the gas all the way until Nov. 6.”

District 47 encompasses western Travis County, including parts of West Austin, Bee Cave, Lakeway and Lago Vista. Workman’s Democratic challenger, Vikki Goodwin, is a real estate business owner who touts public education and gun reforms as top issues. Workman said the top issues he’s focused on for the district are water and transportation.

“It’s a problem. In District 47, we have 620, we have the Y at Oak Hill,” Workman said. “And all of these things are slowing people down.”

Workman said he’d continue to work with TxDOT to make sure the dollars that are needed for transportation issues are there.
