TEXAS – Numerous local schools are asking parents to send students to class with water bottles during the boil water notice issued by Austin Water.

The notice was issued Monday, October 22 after massive flooding hit Texas. The debris and mud in the water will require extensive filtration before it is given the green light to drink safely.

Water must reach a rolling boil for three minutes to kill any harmful bacteria. Schools are shutting off water fountains until the notice is lifted.

Austin Independent School District said the cafeteria will be serving hot lunches and following the boil instructions closely. Fresh food that needs to be washed will not be served. AISD schools will supply any student in need with water, but encourage parents to send water bottles. All afterschool athletics will be cancelled.

The notice is impacting AISD, Lake Travis Independent School District, Dripping Springs Independent School District, Round Rock Independent School District, Pflugerville Independent School District, and Leander Independent School District.

The notice is also impacting the University of Texas at Austin campus. Students are advised not to drink water from fountains, sinks, or showers.
