SAN ANTONIO - It's no secret that this cold weather we're having took a lot of people by surprise. The need for outreach services across the city is going up.

  • Much of Texas plunged into cold weather Monday
  • Salvation Army's emergency shelter was at capacity
  • Blankets and other resources needed

Only a small stack of blankets remain at the Salvation Army's emergency shelter. Overnight, they were at capacity, with more than 120 people looking for relief from the cold. They're asking for blanket donations.

"We can definitely use the blankets for the clients that come here because we're at capacity and it's only October. This could be a sign of things to come," said Brad Mayhar with the Salvation Army.

At Haven for Hope, 624 people stayed inside and out in the courtyard. They pulled out extra blankets from their warehouses and added extra resources from the food bank to help pull people inside.

They're asking for coats, jeans, and other winter clothing.

"Definitely in need of jackets and gloves and scarves, and we're preparing for a really, really cold season," Shanna Salazar with Haven for Hope said.
