SAN ANTONIO — Animal Care Services is investigating a group of teenagers.

ACS says videos recently posted on social media shows what appears to be the torturing and killing of wildlife along Apache Creek near Elmendorf Lake Park.

"There's video of them disposing of the bodies in the creek," Animal Care Services Assistant Director Shannon Sims said.

Sims says they've ID'd four people, both boys and girls, between the ages of 13 and 15, hurting different birds.

ACS can't release the videos because the investigation is ongoing.

"It shows a complete lack of empathy for animals. Multiple kicks, obviously animals trying to get away and things like that once they were injured and unable to do so. It is a very damning video," Sims said.

He says the teens also admitted to torturing turtles.

"Oh they absolutely think it's cool,” he said. “You can hear them laughing, joking, things like that. One of the other most disturbing aspects of this is, there's a definitive correlation between animal cruelty and escalating violence.”

This investigation is disturbing not only to ACS, but for people who frequent the park.

"I think it's bad that we have this place just to hang out in, and to do whatever we want and we're like destroying it," Regina Betancourt said.

"They're not harming anyone, they're just in their habitats, and for people just to be mean to them is wrong, here or anywhere," Antonio Betancourt said.

Sims says the videos were taken on multiple occasions and the torture was ongoing and relentless.

"There wasn't a lot of remorse for the animals, I'm sure there's plenty of remorse for being caught,” Sims said. “If you're over the age of nine, you can face a Class B misdemeanor for animal torture under state law and based on the evidence we have and the ongoing investigation, we intend to pursue these to the fullest extent."
