AUSTIN, Texas – Austinites might not hear the sound of motorcycles rolling into town next summer.

  • Reviewing contract agreement
  • ROT Rally fears losing their spot
  • 24th anniversary next year

The Republic of Texas Rally is caught in a contract dispute with Travis County. On Tuesday, Travis County commissioners will be reviewing a contract agreement with the Travis Central Appraisal District requesting the use of the Travis County Expo Center from May to August.

The issue is that the request is for the same time the ROT Rally is usually held at that location in June. ROT Rally event organizers are concerned, because next year is meant to be their 24th anniversary and they fear losing their spot.

Hector Nieto with the Travis County Commissioners Court said the ROT Rally has been under contract with the county for five years and it is due for renewal. Nieto said the county offered the group a new contract with higher rates for the Expo Center, but got no response.

If commissioners approve the Central Appraisal District's contract, Nieto said the county is still willing to work with ROT Rally.

"We believe there are multiple options on the table still left for them but, in order for county staff to work on those options with them, we need them at the table. We need them communicating directly with us, not through the press. That's not how you negotiate contracts," said Nieto.

Commissioners Court starts at 9 a.m. Nieto is unsure when the item will be taken up.
