FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Fort Bragg celebrated 100 years of service on Tuesday.

  • Camp Bragg was established on Sept. 4, 1918
  • Was originally an artillery training camp
  • It's now the home of the airborne and special operations forces

Camp Bragg was established on Sept. 4, 1918 as one of three artillery training camps. Bragg was the only one to survive and had its name changed to Fort Bragg in 1922.

It's since become the home of the airborne and special operations forces. They're also in the forefront in training for terrorism operations.

"Being here, it makes me feel like I have a bigger purpose than myself and it helps me be able to articulate to others that I come across even those who have never served in the military," Captain at Fort Bragg, Ebony Thomas said.

There are more than 50,000 servicemembers on Fort Bragg and about 30,000 civilians. By 2021, they're projected to grow to another 3,500.

Gov. Roy Cooper signed a proclamation recognizing Sept. 4 as Fort Bragg Centennial Anniversary Day.

In honor of Fort Bragg celebrating 100 years, on Sept. 29, army officials are hosting a Fort Bragg History Challenge that's open to anyone to participate. Click here for more information.
