SAN ANTONIO – A woman is dead and two people are injured after a fire broke out at an apartment complex, causing an explosion on San Antonio's North Side.

More than a dozen people, including 17 children, are displaced from the complex, which is located in the 4100 block of Parkdale. The complex went up in flames around 10 p.m. Monday night.

Officials said they nearly saved the woman who died, but firefighters had to pull back after an explosion during the fire.

"We know she was on the second floor. We still had our ladder at the window. We had gotten up there, opened up the window to make a big enough void to get in. We were about to step in and one of the firefighters had his arms in the window, heard a big boom and it flashed on us,” said San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

One of the victims, a 50-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with burns covering 15 percent of his body.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
