KYLE, Texas -- At the Austin Community College Hays Campus, there's a new training facility for first responders. The new Public Safety Training Center is opening for students this school year after yeas in the making.

"If you can't be trained in this environment, you may not be trainable," Interim Director Dale Toler said.

This state-of-the-art training facility will serve first responders, but they're not the only ones that will benefit from it.

"The original need for the facility was actually for our students," criminal justice professor James Molloy said. "For my students, we do have a licensing program where our students can obtain their state license as peace officers and we didn't have a facility for them."

As part of ACC Hays Campus, students pursuing careers in law enforcement or emergency management will get to stay on campus to take skills tests.

"We have gone from literally not having a facility to having this facility, which is incredible. And my reaction is small compared to our students' reactions. They are just absolutely in love with this building," Molloy said.

The center will also serve local agencies. It's home to an indoor, 50-yard tactical firing range, a 19-acre emergency vehicle operation track, and a force-on-force training center.

"I look at the building, the training center, the firing range, all of this was put together with a very clear thought of helping to educate officers, EMS and Fire," Toler said.

These agencies will learn how to better their craft, as well as learn to work together better.

"These are valuable services. I know the value of these services. I believe in the value of these services. So, training and education, that's all we're going to focus on here. And this facility is top notch. I really was blown away when I first saw it," Toler said.

The grand opening for this building is open for the public next Tuesday morning. The facility will officially be open on Sept. 1.
