AUSTIN, Texas -- Wednesday is National Check the Chip Day, which reminds pet owners to make sure their pets' microchip information is up to date.

Pet microchip licenses are the law in San Antonio and strongly encouraged in the city of Austin.

Microchips are the best way to increase the chances a lost or stolen pet will be reunited with their family. A microchip only protects a pet if the contact information is current. The American Veterinarian Medical Association, along with the American Animal Hospital Association, established the day.

Since microchips are a "one and done" lifetime ID for your pet, the microchip must have updated contact information listed in the chip manufacturer’s database, including a phone number and email address. Any veterinary office or animal shelter can quickly scan your pet’s microchip and give you the number.
