SAN ANTONIO -- Students are getting ready to go back to school and they're having a bit of fun before their first day.

Councilman Manny Pelaez, along with District 8 staff members, handed out 300 free backpacks with school supplies to families in need during the second annual Back 2 School Bash.

Pelaez wants to make sure every student is ready to learn on the first day of school.

"I distinctly remember a mom who came up to us last year and said if it weren't for this I'd be sending my kids to school with absolutely nothing," Pelaez said. "And I'd be very worried that they would have to sit next to kids who did have pencils and notebooks and my kids would be very embarrassed."

That embarrassment for not having a pencil or notebook is something no child should ever feel.

The only requirement for these students was to show up and have fun.

Students also saw a free screening of the new movie "Christopher Robin" following the event. They also received free popcorn and drink.

Pre-K 4 SA and other city departments provided families with additional resources.
