NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the New Braunfels police headquarters, prompting a move into City Hall.

"We've been in this building for about 20 years and it comes with some of the normal problems you might expect, including some rats, some mold issues, that kind of thing. And then Hurricane Harvey came along and really exacerbated those problems," New Braunfels Police Department spokesman David Ferguson said.

Harvey’s rainfall damaged the roof and leaked water inside, most of which exposed sheetrock problems on the Criminal Investigator side of the building. Renovations include adding more offices and creating a large training room.

'We were hoping, though, to be back in here in about four months or so. Instead, we're here a year later and there's still work going on, but now we actually have some real progress happening in the building," Ferguson said.

More than $422,000 is being poured into what is being called a “Band-Aid” project. Police are in need of a bigger space.

"In 2019, there's going to be a bond, and we are still hopeful that a new police headquarters will be on that bond," Ferguson said.

The hope is to start building a new headquarters from scratch. The building was originally built to accommodate 50 employees, and the 159 that are currently utilizing the space need more room.

"Instead of a building that was once a lumber yard, has already been renovated a number of times, including this time, just to get us into a space that we are already going to be at capacity for," Ferguson said.

The police department will be moved back into its original location in the fall.
