AUSTIN, Texas – Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered an emergency special runoff election in Texas State Senate District 19 to elect a state senator to serve out the unexpired term of former Sen. Carlos Uresti. 

The special runoff election between Republican Pete Flores and Democrat Pete Gallego​ will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, with early voting beginning Sept. 10, 2018 .

In the last special election, Flores received 34 percent of the vote, Gallego received 29 percent of the vote, and Roland Gutierrez received 24 percent. The remaining four candidates all received less than 3.5 percent. The seat is up for grabs after former State Sen. Carlos Uresti resigned last month. He was found guilty of fraud in a Ponzi scheme tied to an oil and gas company and sentenced to 12 years in prison

District 19 runs along the Mexico border and includes parts of Bexar and Atascosa counties.
