SAN ANTONIO -- A portion of San Antonio's West Side could soon be getting some special recognition. Directors say a recommendation really is something that was citizen driven to help preserve the culture and heritage of the area.

Next Wednesday, the Office of Historic Preservation is recommending that the Historic Highway 90 corridor be designated as a Cultural Heritage District.

Directors say earlier this year a study found that the road made the cut as a legacy corridor because of all the small businesses, architecture, and history - especially the music history.

A designation doesn't change anything from a regulatory standpoint, but it would make it only the second of its kind in San Antonio. Currently, the Jefferson Heights neighborhood is the only one, and it was designated back in 2005.

"Really, it was driven by an interest from the community in the history of the corridor, and so we worked with community members to gather oral histories and collect photos and just really learn about the cultural significance of the places along the corridor," said Shanon Miller, director of the Office of Historic Preservation.

The Office of Historic Preservation will be making the recommendation next Wednesday, August 15, at 3 p.m.
