AUSTIN, Texas  — Texans will hopefully see shorter lines and wait times when they go to the driver license office.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced that starting immediately it will add additional DPS personnel - including Texas Troopers - to the highest-volume DL offices. The extra personnel will help identify customers who can immediately get out of line and conduct their transaction online, by phone or by mail.

DPS also plans to hire for 100 new positions over the course of the next few months to increase staffing at the busiest offices in the state.

According to DPS, the majority of the 3.6 million people who visited Texas driver license offices could complete their business online, by phone or by mail. They hope this new protocol will reduce wait times at offices or allow customers to skip the trip completely.
