SAN ANTONIO -- A town hall meeting held on the UTSA campus on Saturday gave residents a closer look into the San Antonio police department.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus talked about several ways his department is evolving to effectively fight crime.

Topics from community engagement to task force success were covered but the hot topic was the department’s staffing. According to Chief McManus the department is currently experiencing its lowest vacancy rate since 2013. Currently, 88 positions are vacant and any shift not covered is taken over by one of more than 2,000 officers currently employed.

While the chief said retention is steady, some in the crowd had concerns over the workload officers are given especially in the Special Victims Unit. It is a unit that recently faced criticism after a detective neglected dozens of sexual assault cases

During the town hall, McManus mentioned the addition of 19 new detectives to work these types of cases.
