NATIONWIDE – The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on non-dairy products that are classified milk.

The FDA said soy and almond milk do not qualify as milk because they do not contain lactose.

Sales of plant-based products have grown more than 60 percent over the past five years. On the other hand, dairy farmers are experiencing a financial crisis as milk prices have dropped 40 percent over the past four years.

The move would be a major boost for dairy groups that have petitioned the FDA for the removal of milk in the names of non-dairy products.

In 2016, Congress sent a letter to FDA claiming that the use of “milk” in the name of plant-based products misleads customers and violates standards.
