SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Police have issued a warning to San Marcos residents following the discovery of a card skimmer at a gas station. Seargent Bryan Mobley said officers discovered a skimming device at an Exxon pump on July 6. No arrests have been made in that case.

He said that the skimmers are becoming more prevalent, not just in bigger areas like San Antonio and Austin, but in San Marcos as well.

The suspects are using card skimming devices like overlays, and nowadays even tapping into the system through Bluetooth technology. He wants to see gas station employees taking initiative by checking the pumps.

"It behooves them to maybe check themselves because police don't have the manpower to go and check all these gas stations. But as a gas station, they need to train their people to do that," Mobley said.

If you believe you've become a victim, reach out to the police station's non-emergency line. That number is 512-753-2103.

"Contact your credit card company, your bank. Notify them. They have their own investigations, they'll look into it. File a local report with your police agency and they will do what they can to see if they can solve the crime or not," Mobley said.

Other pieces of advice he gives are going inside to pay and staying away from older pumps that use vertical card readers.
