SAN ANTONIO -- The Fourth of July is typically one of the busiest nights for San Antonio's Animal Care Services. However, this year Mother Nature's fireworks might have made all the difference.

Rain on the Fourth of July was actually good news for ACS. They did get a number of puppies, though, and dogs with collars, which is generally a tell-tale sign that they're somebody's pet.

"We always tell people, make sure you do everything you can to protect your pets on the Fourth of July. Well, what did we get this Fourth of July? A whole bunch of rain, and that actually protected us, we think," said Lisa Norwood with Animal Care Services.

Even though fireworks still lit up the night sky, smaller firecrackers were harder to light because the ground was wet.

Norwood said that on any given day, ACS sees upward of 100 animals come into the shelter. During the Fourth of July holiday that number can go up to 200.

Any time your pet goes missing, ACS should be your first place to check. Norwood said they've seen a number of animals with collars and microchips, and their team is working hard to reunite pets with their owners.

"Any time we do start to see animals coming in with those collars, with the microchips, with any sort of condition that makes us think this is an owned animal, those animals get some extra time here at the shelter," Norwood said.
