SAN ANTONIO — A local college was selected by the United Way and Kellogg’s to participate in the United Against Food Deserts program.

Palo Alto College is located on the Southside of San Antonio and has the cities only horticulture program. It is also located in a food desert.

The Palo Alto student garden was started by the Horticulture Department for students to get hands on experience in gardening and farming. On Saturday, volunteers pulled away weeds from the garden.

Fresh produce from the garden will be used by students at Palo Alto, and for breakfast in the childcare program.

Palo Alto College is one of nine spots across the country that is part of this year's initiative.
