SAN ANTONIO -- People visiting the newly opened San Pedro Creek Culture Park will notice a popular section off limits.

San Antonio River Authority closed an area to stop people from swimming in the creek water, which is deemed to be unsafe. A small section at the Plaza de Fundacion is now closed for design and safety changes.

To help keep people from being exposed to contaminants, crews are now working to flatten the depth of the channel from 18 inches to 2 to 3 inches.

"One it’s not safe, just because it wasn’t designed for the intention of swimming. But secondly, the plaza area gets influenced by storm water runoff that comes in to the creek. This a creek; it has to function as a creek and as that storm water comes in, it brings with it pollutants," said Suzanne Scott, San Antonio River Authority General Manager.

Scott continued to say that the initial project was under budget and that money is now helping pay for the new changes. Construction should last for about three weeks.
