SAN ANTONIO -- Thousands of children’s books are now in the hands of San Antonio ISD students.

Saturday, families filled up boxes, baskets and bags with 10 of their favorite books. The Alliance of Teacher and Support Personnel partnered with national nonprofit, First Book, to host the event.

Together, the groups collected and distributed 40,000 free books at Via's Grand Building. Organizers said the books will help students from falling behind on their reading.

"As a former first-grade teacher, i know how important it is for kids to have the opportunity over the summer so we are thrilled to be able to do this,” said Shelley Potter, San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel.

This was the first time the giveaway was hosted. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.
